MCI WorldCom International
WorldCom International (now branded as Verizon) provided services to customers worldwide serving corporate, SME and residential consumers as well as resellers, with operations managed by the local sales and marketing operating companies, supported by a centralised billing operation.
Challenge
- The ongoing business requirements to meet customer needs meant that WorldCom needed to upgrade the main International billing system (Arbor).
- Production issues within the billing process had been severely impacting billing performance, leading to some loss of confidence by the in-country operating companies.
- The billing system vendor was engaged in technical investigations of the operational problems and in architecting a major upgrade proposal - that had stalled.
Project Scope
- Resolved existing major production problems and improved operational level performance measures without infrastructure investment.
- Identified and addressed root causes of outsource data centre operational issues.
- Validated requirements and gained top level management support for migration to a multiserver architecture upgrade to the platform.
- This major upgrade subsequently went ahead, supporting a large growth in the customer base and in traffic levels.
Business Benefits
- In conjunction with the billing system vendor, performed indepth analyses of multiple technical problems affecting batch processing performance and of the operational processes.
- Conducted a Business requirements gathering exercise with all relevant operational and business owners (UK and European OpCos).
